Girard, which opened its doors in 2014, was a French-inspired bruncherie located in Fishtown, Philadelphia. More significantly, Girard was the first “no-tipping” restaurant in the city of Brotherly Love, providing fair wages, paid time off, and health insurance to its employees — a rarity in the food industry.
The restaurant’s eclectic and signature interior, designed by Otto Architects, served as great inspiration for developing Girard’s branding. For their launch, I created an updated logo design, menus, and other print collateral. The website, too, was an exciting design that further pushed Girard’s colorful identity.
Girard’s owner Brian Oliveira — yes, my brother! — is a renowned chef who continues to educate restauranteurs on how to design equitable businesses on behalf of workers. While Girard has since closed his doors, Brian and his husband now run Happy Hour Hospitality, a catering business, and La Cozinha, a traveling Portuguese-inspired kitchen.
